A group of farmers, led by the Desiya Thennindhiya Nadhigal Inaippu Vivasayigal Sangam state president P. Ayyakannu, were arrested after they resorted to a “rail roko” agitation in Tiruchi, which delayed the Chennai-bound Vaigai Express from Madurai on Friday. The farmers were protesting against the police crackdown on farmers protesting on the Punjab-Haryana border.

Police sources said Mr. Ayyakannu along with others assembled on the Cauvery bridge at Odathurai in the morning and resorted to agitation on the railway track leading to the delay of Vaigai Express for nearly 30 minutes. The group raised slogans demanding protection for farmers.

The Government Railway Police and the Tiruchi City Police came to the spot and removed the group and cleared the section for rail traffic. A case has been registered by the Railway Protection Force, Tiruchi, in this connection. Those held were later released.
