Attukal Pongala bricks to be reused to build houses for the poor


The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation will reuse the bricks which will be used to make makeshift hearths for the Attukal Pongala to be held next month for constructing houses for the families identified as extremely poor. The Corporation has identified a total of 581 extremely poor families in the city. Out of these families, 24 homeless beneficiaries will be provided homes under the LIFE housing projects, for which the collected bricks will be used.

Mayor Arya Rajendran said in a press release on Saturday that the Corporation will collect the used bricks and transport them to the construction site of the beneficiaries.

The civic body has already provided flats for 19 of the extremely poor families and funds for house maintenance for 74 families. Additionally, it has provided study tools to 75 students from extremely backward families, doorstep supply of essential items through Supplyco to 319 beneficiaries, palliative care and medicines for 278 bedridden beneficiaries and ₹50,000 each for 36 beneficiaries for self-employment.
