Congress general secretary and MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has said that the United Democratic Front (UDF) activists need to realise that they are the “soldiers and warriors” for “the soul of India.”

She was addressing the booth-level workers of the UDF in the Eranad Assembly segment in Malappuram district that falls in her Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency on Sunday.

Ms. Vadra said the fight that the party workers were fighting was not just for their own politics or ideas. “It is a fight for the Constitution of India, for the country’s essence, and for everything that makes our nation what it is today… It is probably the first time in the history of our nation that we have a government that is working to weaken the Constitution and democracy. So, you’re not just soldiers and warriors for the UDF, but for the soul of India as well,” she said.

Ms. Vadra said that through them, the people would understand the truth of what was going on in the country and that they were fighting for their rights and the Constitution. “It is because you all remain connected to the people, and you understand what their issues are and bring those issues to us that we are able to serve the people and resolve them,” she said.

Later, speaking at another meeting in the Thiruvambadi Assembly constituency in Kozhikode district, she promised to pressure the Union and State governments to increase the funds for mitigating human-animal conflicts in Wayanad. Ms. Vadra said that the Corporate Social Responsibility funds too could be utilised for the cause.

Shortage of funds

The Congress leader said that she would try her best to minimise the instances of human-animal conflicts. She claimed that officials, including the district magistrate, had cited the shortage of funds during a meeting following the death of a woman due to the attack of a tiger in Mananthavady.
