Twelve grama panchayats in Alappuzha district have been declared tuberculosis-free.
Ezhupunna, Vayalar, Kodamthuruthu, Kuthiathode, Perumbalam, Kadakarappally, Muhamma, Mararikulam South, Punnapra South, Kavalam, Pulinkunnu and Thakazhi were declared TB-free at a function held at Muthukulam as part of the valedictory of the 100-day TB elimination campaign recently.
It was inaugurated by Muthukulam block panchayat president Ambujakshy.
Officials said that over five lakh people were screened in the district during the 100-day campaign conducted as part of the national TB elimination programme. Additional District Magistrate Asha C. Abraham presented bronze medals to the TB-free panchayats.
An awareness rally organised in connection with the programme was flagged off by Kayamkulam Deputy Superintendent of Police N. Babukuttan. Muthukulam grama panchayat president K.V. Jyothi Prabha presided.
