The police have registered a case against P.V. Anvar, former MLA of Nilambur and current State convener of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), in connection with a statement in which he threatened to “rip off the heads of CPI(M) leaders” who sent their cadres to attack United Democratic Front (UDF) and Trinamool Congress leaders in Nilambur.

The case was registered at Edakkara police station following a complaint against Mr. Anvar by CPI(M) Edakkara area secretary. The police booked Mr. Anvar under Sections 192 and 351 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot and for criminal intimidation respectively.

Mr. Anvar made the controversial remark on February 25 during a speech at Chungathara after the UDF wrested power in Chungathara panchayat from the Left Democratic Front (LDF). Mr. Anvar was instrumental in dethroning the LDF rule in Chungathara.

During his speech, Mr. Anvar had said that some CPI(M) leaders were sending their workers to attack the UDF and Trinamool Congress local leaders. He warned those CPI(M) leaders that their heads would be ripped off if they sent their cadres against the UDF and Trinamool.

The CPI(M) said that Mr. Anvar’s remarks were inflammable and was an exhortation for his followers to take the law into their hands.

The police said they were investigating the case.
