Two sentenced to 10 years’ RI for drug peddling


The Ernakulam 7th Additional Sessions Court sentenced two key members of a drug racket engaged in the supply of MDMA in Ernakulam, to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment (RI). They were also slapped with a fine of ₹1 lakh.

The convicted are Susimol M. Sunny, 26, of Kottayam and Ameer Sohail, 25, of Aluva. The second and third accused in the case – Ajmal K.A., 24, of Vypeen, and Elroy Varghese, 22, of Angamaly – were acquitted on the grounds of lack of evidence, said a release from the Excise department. Judge P.M. Suresh Babu delivered the verdict.

The case was registered in October 2023. The racket had followed a modus operandi of dropping MDMA packages meant for prospective customers on garbage piles before speeding off on premium motorcycles at night.

The Excise team led by Ernakulam Assistant Excise Commissioner T.N. Sudeer, Excise special squad inspector K.P. Pramod, State Excise Enforcement Squad preventive officer N.D. Tomy, and preventive officer N.G. Ajith Kumar made the seizure and arrests and completed all legal procedures.
