Student writes to PM opposing participation of V-C and two others in today’s convocation

A research student in the Kannada Department of Central University of Karnataka in Kalaburagi Nandappa P. has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Ministry of Education and the University Grants Commission (UGC) opposing the participation of university Vice-Chancellor Battu Satyanarayana, Registrar R.R. Biradar and security officer Mithilesh in the eighth convocation of the university scheduled for Tuesday.

His contention is that the officers mentioned are facing serious charges under Prevention of Atrocities against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes 1989 and trial is under way in a court of law.

The student has, in a release here on Monday, said that a complaint was filed against all the three people at Narona Police Station on August 1, 2024 for not allowing him to enter the university main gate.

Nandappa has in his complaint said that he is being targeted by the university authorities because he belongs to Dalit community.

He has claimed that a trial is going on in the Kalaburagi District Court in connection with the case and all the three are out on bail.

The student, who is also the complainant, has questioned whether the Vice-Chancellor officiating at the convocation will uphold the academic credibility and spirit of the Constitution.

He said that it will be a disgrace to the entire academics and also to the university if an accused officiates at the convocation.
