A meeting convened by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday (February 02, 2025) reviewed the preparations for the Thrissur Pooram to be held on May 6.
The Chief Minister suggested forming a security action plan for the Pooram and emphasised that there should be no ambiguity in the event’s organisation. He stressed that the Pooram must proceed in a manner that respects traditional rituals while ensuring uncompromising security measures. He directed the Cochin Devaswom Board to resolve the rent dispute of exhibition space at the Sree Vadakkunnathan Temple grounds amicably.
The district administration has been directed to coordinate with various departments to ensure the event runs smoothly. He directed that all safety protocols, including firework regulations, elephant parades, and crowd control, must strictly adhere to existing laws and court orders. Measures to ensure public safety, elephant welfare, and the proper handling of fireworks should be taken in collaboration with the police. Additionally, the Forest department was urged to expedite the issuance of ownership certificates of captive elephants .
Medical emergencies
Health precautions must also be a priority, with sufficient medical personnel, ambulances, and hospital readiness ensured. Private hospitals in Thrissur should be alerted to any emergency situations and be ready to act swiftly. Fire safety measures should be implemented at the fireworks venues and at the Thekkinkadu grounds, with necessary fire safety equipment and personnel stationed appropriately.
The Chief Minister also noted complaints about organisational issues from last year’s Pooram and instructed the Devaswom and authorities to exercise caution to avoid similar mistakes this time.
The meeting was attended by Union Minister Suresh Gopi, Revenue Minister K. Rajan, Devaswom Minister V.N. Vasavan, Higher Education Minister R. Bindu, Chief Secretary Sharada Muraleedharan, and heads of various departments.
