Three persons of a family allegedly ended their lives by jumping into the VC canal in Mandya district on Monday.
They have been identified as Masthappa, 52, an autorickshaw driver, his wife Rathnamma, 40, and their daughter Lakshmi, 14. They were the residents of Ganjam village in Srirangapatna taluk.
Unable to bear the burden of debt, Masthappa, who had reportedly borrowed loans from various people, drove his autorickshaw to Chandagalu village in Mandya taluk along with his wife and daughter and jumped into the canal, the police said.
Locals, who were working in nearby fields and noticed it, tried to save them but in vain.
The bodies of Masthappa and Rathnamma have been found and search is on for Lakshmi’s body, according to reports reaching here.
Senior police officials, including Superintendent of Police Mallikarjuna Baladandi, visited the spot.
