In a significant development, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has resolved a prolonged rent dispute with traders operating within the Public Utility Building (PUB) on M.G. Road. This settlement is set to recover approximately ₹7 crore in outstanding arrears.
The PUB, once a bustling commercial hub in the 1980s and 1990s, has faced challenges in recent years due to declining footfall and maintenance issues. Traders have long expressed concern over inadequate upkeep and escalating rent demands by the BBMP.
Out of 88 shops in the complex, only about 50 are operational, with many proprietors citing the BBMP’s neglect as a primary reason for shuttering their businesses. The shops entered into an out-of-court settlement. The mediation was led by Special Commissioner (Revenue) Munish Moudgil.
In response to the mounting grievances, the BBMP initiated discussions with PUB Traders Association, culminating in an agreement to settle the outstanding dues. This resolution not only addresses the immediate financial concerns but also paves the way for potential improvements in the building’s infrastructure and maintenance.
