National Geospatial Knowledge-based Land Survey of Urban Habitations (NAKSHA), a project that is conceptualised for creating geospatial records for properties in urban areas, was launched in Mysuru on Tuesday.

MLA and former Minister G.T. Deve Gowda launched the project at a function held in Bogadi here. NAKSHA has been undertaken by the Department of Land Resources, Ministry of Rural Development, in collaboration with the Departments of Revenue, Survey, Settlement and Land Records, and Municipal Administration.

The pilot project is expected to cost ₹194 crore.

It aims to create and update land records in urban areas to ensure accurate and reliable documentation of land ownership. The initiative will empower citizens, improve ease of living, enhance urban planning, and reduce land-related disputes.

The IT-based system for property record administration will foster transparency and efficiency and support sustainable development, noted a press release from the PIB following the launch early this month by Union Minister of Rural Development and Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

The Survey of India is the technical partner for the NAKSHA programme. Aerial surveys of the urban properties are conducted and orthorectified images are created as part of the project. The role of the States in this national pilot programme is to conduct field surveys and ground truthing using the orthorectified imagery, leading to the final publication of urban and semi-urban land records, it stated.

Speaking on the occasion, the MLA spoke on the objectives of the NAKSHA programme and how it will help in documenting land ownership.

Land Records director, E. Prakash, said the project has been launched in 152 urban local bodies in the country, including 10 here in Karnataka.
